WE ARE IN NEED OF PARENT VOLUNTEERS!

Without YOU we cannot run meets and team activities. Divers love having their families involved in the summer fun and volunteering your time is a fantastic way to meet other RAPIDS families! Several parents are needed to run each dive meet. You don't need dive experience to fulfill most dive meet volunteer roles. Some positions only take a few minutes to learn! However, Clinics are offered through the NVSL to train parents to judge.

Judges are always needed for our meets. Judging clinics are offered by the NVSL.

Dive Meet Volunteer Roles

Page Title

Meet set up

Help set up the pool for home meets. The more volunteers, the faster the set up!

Announcer

Announces each diver, the dive, and the degree of difficulty (all provided on the diver meet sheet), and calls the scores shown by the judges. Sets the atmosphere and controls the tempo of the meet.

Announcing an NVSL Dive Meet

National Anthem (home meets only)

The National Anthem is played before the start of every NVSL A meet. We welcome RAPIDS adults or children to share your talent with our dive community by singing or playing the National Anthem before the meet.

Judge

Scores the dives on a scale of 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest) in gradations of ½ point according to the NVSL standards. NVSL recommends the use of 5 judges for competitive A meets. The number may be reduced to 3 for developmental B meets.

More information from NVSL here:  Diving 101

Referee (home meets only)

Ensure the meet is conducted in accordance with the rules and ensures fair and equitable competitive conditions exist at all times for all divers. Exercise full authority to carry out responsibilities. This NVSL-certified official makes decisions regarding failed dives, balks, etc. The referee can serve as a judge and must be positioned on the pool deck during meets as close as practicable to the judges to maintain a uniform visual perspective with respect to the dives. Must be familiar with the current NVSL Handbook as well as the USA Diving Rules and Regulations. Individuals must have volunteered as a judge for at least 1 A-meet in the prior dive season to be eligible to volunteer as a referee.

Table worker

A table worker is either a scorekeeper or a calculator. "A" Meets require 2 scorekeepers and 2 calculators between the teams. Easy on the job training provided.

  1. The scorekeepers write down the judges’ scores as announced. They eliminate the lowest and highest score and total the remaining 3 scores onto the diver meet sheet. The scorekeepers then compares their scores and resolves any discrepancies before passing the diver meet sheet to the calculators.
  2. The calculators multiply the total score by the degree of difficulty (DD), as indicated on the diver meet sheet, to determine the total points awarded for the dive and keep a running overall score for the diver and compare calculations as a check to ensure for accuracy.

More information from NVSL here:  Keeping score at dive meet

Meet Secretary (home meets only)

Inspects all diver meet sheets for correctness prior to the meet and prepares a list of the competitors for the meet announcer. Reviews the scores and the points awarded for each diver to determine the winner / place order for each event as well as the points awarded to the teams. Also records the meet results and works with Ribbon Clerk to prepare the ribbons for all meet participants.

Ribbons Clerk (home meets only)

Collects final age group dive sheets from the Meet Secretary. Populates information on ribbon label and then attaches label to correct ribbon, then to diver sheet.

Photographer

Photograph the team event. After the event, you’ll work with a team representative to upload photos so we can share pictures with all dive team families.

Meet take down/clean up (home meets only)

Take down equipment and supplies following the meet and get the pool ready for general pool availability. The more volunteers, the faster we go home!

Popsicles (home meets only)

The home team provides popsicles for all divers (home + visiting) to enjoy following the completion of their events.
